Lloyd Webber
Elaine Paige
Tämä kissoista kertova video , "Memory"  on lähestymässä 10’000’000 katselukertaa, oikeutetusti, sillä Andrew Lloyd Webberin musiikki on kääntänyt TS Eliotin "Old Possum Book of Cats" erääksi historian pitkäikäisimmistä Broadwayn, West Endin ja kansainvälisen musikaalin lavatuotannoista. Elaine Paige on Grizabella, entinen glamour kissa, joka on kadottanut loistonsa.

Memoryn lyriikka kuitenkin on peräisin Trevor Nunnilta, ei suoranaisesti Eliotin runosta (vaikka nämä tiedot pohjautuvat Eliotin runosta saatuihin vaikutteisiin).

This video of "Memory" from CATS is nearing 10,000,000 views, rightfully so since Andrew Lloyd Webber's music has turned T. S. Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Cats" into one of the longest-running Broadway / West End / international musical stage productions ever. Elaine Paige is Grizabella, a former glamour cat, who has lost her sparkle.

The lyrics for Memory, however, are from Trevor Nunn, not from Eliot (although they are based on an Eliot poem).

Useless tidbit: When my daughter was very little, she sang the first lines not as "Midnight. Not a sound from the pavement," but as "Midnight and the kitties are sleeping..." Every other song was about cats, so she made sure this one was as well.

Lyrics to Memory (Cats) :
Daylight
See the dew on the sunflower
And a rose that is fading
Roses whither away
Like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day . . .

Midnight
Not a sound from the pavement
Has the moon lost her memory?
She is smiling alone
In the lamplight
The withered leaves collect at my feet
And the wind begins to moan

Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again

Every streetlamp
Seems to beat a fatalistic warning
Someone mutters
And the streetlamp gutters
And soon it will be morning

Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I musn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
