Mozart sävelsi teoksen La Clemenza di Tito, tai
Clemency Titus, sen jälkeen kun häntä lähestyi Domenico Guardasoni, joka oli
vastuussa siitä, että Böömin linnaa varten hankittiin uusi teos Böömin kuninkaaksi
valitun Leopold II kruunajaisten kunniaksi.
Mozart oli työskennellyt tuolloin Taikahuilun parissa, mutta keskeytti
sen heinäkuussa 1791 säveltääkseen La Clemenza
di Titon (kuuntele alkusoitto), joka
kantaesitettiin syyskuussa. Siinä ei ollut paljon aikaa luoda kruunajaisiin sovelias teos!
Ooppera tapahtumapaikka on
Rooma vuonna 79.
Vitellia, vallasta syöstyn keisari Vitellion tytär, juonittelee Titoa vastaan, mutta hän myös toivoo,
että Tito valitsee hänet keisarinnakseen.

La Clemenza di Tito, or The Clemency of Titus, was
composed by Mozart after he was approached by Domenico Guardasoni, who was
responsible for providing the Estate of Bohemia with a new work to celebrate
the coronation of Leopold II as King of Bohemia.
Mozart was working on The Magic Flute at the time, but broke away in July of 1791 to compose La Clemenza di Tito, which premiered in September. Not much time to create a work befitting a coronation!
The opera takes place in Rome, in the year 79. Vitellia, daughter of deposed emperor Vitellio, is scheming against Tito, but she is also hoping Tito will choose her as his empress, in this aria "Deh, se placer mi vuoi /Ah, if you wished to please me."
